“AFTER ADVENT? – Part 2”

INTRO: Luke 2:52 summarizes the focus of Jesus’ life after the first Christmas until He was 30 years of age. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men. (Luke 2:52) Jesus grew holistically – intellectually, physically, spiritually and relationally. Holistic growth is synergistic, and the weakest link may hinder the other dimensions. All the dimensions are spiritual!

I. PHYSICAL – Being a Good Steward of your Health

  1. Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, belongs to God, and should be used to glorify God (1Cor. 6:19-20).
  2. Glorifying God in your body includes the things you do while in your body & being a good steward of your body.

II. FOUR INGREDIENTS FOR PHYSICAL HEALTH:

  1. Exercise.
    1. Physical exercise has some value (1Tim. 4:8a; Prov. 24:5).
      1. Are you profiting regularly from bodily exercise?
      2. Wise people take care of themselves physically.
    2. Short, intense resistance training has shown to be the most efficient and effective way to condition your muscles.
      1. 6-8 exercises, 1 set of each to failure (4-10 slow reps), 1-2 times per week, with little rest between exercises.
  2. Diet.
    1. Many experts estimate health is 85% diet & 15% exercise.
    2. Think in terms of lifestyle changes, not going on a diet.
    3. Research & experiment to find out what works for you.
    4. Quit making excuses!
    5. Little changes can make a big difference over time.
  3. Rest – adequate sleep and rest, including a weekly sabbath (Ex. 20:8-11; Gen. 2:2-3; Heb. 4:1, 4, 9-11)
  4. Stress Management (Phil. 4:6-8; Mt. 11:28-30; 1 Pet. 5:7).
    1. Pray about what stresses you (Phil. 4:6-7).
    2. Renew your mind (Phil. 4:8).
    3. Seek Jesus for His easy yoke, light burden & rest (Mt. 11:28-30).
    4. Cast your cares upon Jesus & leave them there (1 Pet. 5:7)!

CONCLUSION: Will you be a good steward of your health?
