By Grace Through Faith – Part 2

“BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH – Pt. 2”

REVIEW/INTRO: We are saved by grace through faith, and not by either one independent of the other (Eph. 2:8).

IS GOD SOVEREIGN?

  1. Definition: Supreme in power and authority.
  2. Scriptures: Ps. 103:19; 115:3; 1Chron. 29:11; Jer. 32:17; Matt. 28:18.
  3. God’s sovereignty doesn’t mean that our actions have no influence on what God does (Matt. 6:10; Ja. 5:14-18).
  4. It does mean that God can do what He chooses to do.
  5. It does mean that God may also choose not to do what ultimately is His will (Ezek. 22:30-31).

IS GOD IN CONTROL?

  1. God is in control of the big picture (Isa. 46:9-10).
  2. God has given man a free will and the authority to exercise governance on the earth (Ps.115:16; Lk. 10:19)
  3. God will often allow man to choose to do what is contrary to His will, and therefore His will is not always done.
  4. God will at times overrule man’s will to accomplish His bigger purposes (2Pet. 3:7, 10-13; Rev. 21:1).

IS EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS GOD’S WILL?

  1. Jesus rebukes a storm (Matt. 8:23-27).
  2. Peter commanded a lame man to walk (Acts 3:1-10).
  3. Often things not God’s will happen because we don’t exercising our faith (Matt. 11:12; Mk. 11:22b-24; Ja. 4:2b, 7; 1Pet. 5:8-9a; Jn. 10:10).
  4. We can use our faith to appropriate what God has provided by grace or we not experience His grace.
  5. God wants us to learn to be responsible and to use our free will to govern wisely.
  6. Some of what happens to us is because of others.
  7. People perish for lack of knowledge (Hos. 4:6) and knowing the truth sets us free (Jn. 8:32).

CONCLUSION: An overemphasis on God’s sovereignty encourages spiritual passivism resulting in defeat.
