Changing the Trajectory of a Crisis

“Changing the Trajectory of a Crisis”

Pastor Becky Johnson

Introduction

James 3:4 “Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires.”

We have the power in our tongue to literally change the trajectory of a crisis in our life, of this by what we speak!

A.  Turning a Ship

The placement of the rudder is one of the keys to turning the ship.  The rudder is a flat piece of material placed behind the ship, at the aft, and is located behind the propeller of the ship.  The propeller, when moving, increases the velocity of the water that flows out of its slipstream.

The Captain begins to turn the ship by turning the wheel which is attached by hydraulics to the rudder and turns the angle of the rudder.  The propeller is moving and as the force of the water is guided by the angle of the rudder, the ship turns.

The trajectory is determined by how the ship is turned, how the rudder is positioned, how fast the propeller is moving… all of these determine the path or track that the ship will take, the course it will be on.

B.  Our Tongue Can Change the Trajectory of a Crisis

Understanding the power, we have in our words, in our tongue, is key to changing the trajectory and outcome of a situation!  Every one of us has trouble with our tongue and the words we speak.  James 3:2

“If anyone does not stumble in word…”  Word = “something said including the thought”.

How can we change the trajectory of our life and of our situation by our tongue, by the things we say and think?  It begins with understanding the power that we have in our words and thoughts, understanding who we are in Christ, understanding the power that we carry within us because the Holy Spirit dwells within us.  Understanding the authority, we have in our words and thoughts, the power we carry in our words and in our thinking, in our mind.

C.  You are His child, His sons and daughters, His heirs

John 1:12  A son or daughter is one that carries the very DNA of the father.

The DNA can be found in any part of the body and when tested it tells us who your father is. DNA is the material that transfers genetic characteristics to one’s children.  DNA is the fundamental and distinctive characteristics of someone.

It can be tested from pretty much any part of your body – it can be tested from your blood, your hair, your saliva, etc… and with proper testing your will know exactly who your father is.  As His son or daughter you carry the very DNA of our Heavenly Father!  You carry His blood in you, you carry His characteristics in you, you carry His Spirit in you!  We are created in the image of God and have His DNA within us.  Genesis 1:27

Carrying the DNA of God is what gives us distinct characteristics as His children.  Carrying the DNA of God the Father is what gives us our true identity. All authority has been given to Jesus, His Name is the Name above all names!  He has given you all authority in His Name.   You carry His Name as His sons and daughters!

When we carry His Name it comes with His authority.  Matthew 28:18; Luke 10:19

D.  The Power of the Tongue

In Genesis we see that when God spoke, He created. Proverbs 18:21  The very words you speak create life or death.  The very words you speak set the trajectory for the thing you are speaking to or of, to live or die.

When a crisis comes, what words are you speaking about the crisis?  When a situation arises, what words are you speaking about the situation? Is it life or death?  We carry the power, in our tongue, in our words, to bring life or death into the situation!  Psalm 39:1  “I will guard my ways”. Ways = “a road, a course of life”. I will guard and protect my life by speaking life over myself in this crisis!

“lest I sin with my tongue”. Sin = “miss the mark, miss the way, miss the goal or path”. I will guard how I speak with my tongue so that I don’t miss the way, the mark, the trajectory of living out all that God has for me!  I will speak healing and protection over my family, over my church family, over my city, over those in authority over me, over our nation!  Proverbs 23:7a What are you thinking and meditating on?

The things we think about set the course for our heart’s positioning.  Luke 6:45b  Where our heart is positioned, positive or negative, it comes out in our words, in the things we say.  Position your heart on the Lord.  Fix your eyes on Jesus.  He is your Deliverer!  He is your Healer!  He is your Salvation!

Romans 12:2  This verse literally means do not be conformed; do not fashion yourself and make yourself into the same pattern as the world’s way of thinking.  But be transformed, be transfigured (same word that was used referring to Christ being transfigured on the mount of transfiguration)!

You become transformed by renewing your mind in Christ.  This renewing is a renovation from the old way of thinking into the new Godly way of thinking!  When our heart is positioned toward Christ, then our words and our prayers will shift the very rudder of this crisis ship, powered by the Holy Spirit propeller and change the trajectory of this virus!

E.  Wisdom

At the end of James 3, 2 kinds of wisdom.  Earthly wisdom is self-seeking and envious, it brings confusion, whereas wisdom from above is pure, peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy, without partiality.

Proverbs 12:18b “the tongue of the wise promotes health.”  Wisdom from above isn’t judgmental of those who think differently than we do about this crisis, but instead presents mercy without partiality to others.

Wisdom from above prays fervently for our nation and our neighbors, not just our own family!

F.  Prayer

How do we pray in the midst of this crisis?  Understanding the power of the Holy Spirit within us, the power we carry in our very words, we pray in authority over the virus!  We pray death to the virus and life to the people suffering from the virus.  We pray death to the plans of the enemy, and we pray life to God’s plan, we pray God’s healing and deliverance for our nation, our neighbors, our family’s.

When you think you are exhausted and can’t keep going, wait on the Lord and He will renew your strength.  When you feel like this is just impossible, remember that with God all things are possible.  When you feel like you just can’t do it anymore, Jesus said in His Word that you can do all things through Him.  When you feel anxious over your finances, God says He will supply all of your needs and make a way where there seems to be no way.  When you feel gripped with fear…. 2 Timothy 1:7 “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind!”

You have the power of life and death in your tongue!  You have the power to change the trajectory of your path in the power of your tongue!
