Encounters With Christ – Part 2

“ENCOUNTERS WITH CHRIST – Pt. II” (Jn. 1:19-51)

INTRO: In this series we’re going to be focusing on encounters people in the gospels had with Christ and the impact of those encounters. As we journey through these encounters, I encourage you to insert yourself into the story and encounter Christ in the story!

  • John’s summary of having encountered Christ (1Jn. 1:1-4).
  • John’s introduction of Jesus Christ (John 1:1-18).

WHO IS JESUS?

  1. Jesus always existed (vv. 1-2).
  2. Jesus is the Word (vv. 1, 14).
  3. Jesus is God incarnate (vv. 1, 14).
  4. Jesus was an active agent in the creation (vv. 3, 10).
  5. Jesus exudes life and light (vv. 4-5, 9).
  6. Jesus was rejected by His own people (v. 11; see vv. 12-16).

I. JOHN’S [the Baptist’s] WITNESS OF JESUS (John 1:19-28).

  1. John was asked who he was & why he baptized (19, 22, 25).
  2. John’s answer (John 1:23; Isa. 40:3).

II. JOHN’S BAPTISM OF JESUS (Matt. 3:13-17; Jn. 1:29-34).

  1. Matthew’s account (Matt. 3:13-17).
  2. John’s account (John 1:29-34).
  3. Let’s encounter this same Jesus!

III. JOHN’S DISICIPLES’ ENCOUTER WITH JESUS (Jn. 1:35-51).

  1. John pointed two of his disciples to Jesus (vv. 35-39).
    1. “What do you seek?” (v. 38)
    2. “Come and see.” (v. 39)
  2. Andrew introduces his brother Peter to Jesus (Jn. 1:40-42).
  3. Jesus invites Philip to follow Him (John 1:43-44).
    1. “Follow Me.” (v. 34)
  4. Philip introduces Nathanael to Jesus (John 1:45-51).
    1. “You will see greater things than these.” (v. 50).
    2. “… you shall see heaven open, …” (v. 51).

CONCLUSION: Do you “know” Jesus (Jn. 1:10, 26, 31, 33-34)?

“What do you seek?” “Come and see!” “Follow Me.”

“You will see greater things than these.” “… you shall see heaven open, …” Have a personal encounter with Christ!
