Freedom From the Bondage of Sin & The Law/Works (Romans 6:11-7:25)

“FREEDOM FROM THE BONDAGE OF SIN & THE LAW/WORKS” (Rom. 6:11 – 7:25)

REVIEW/INTRO: Grace doesn’t give us an excuse for sloppy or carnal living (Rom. 6:1-2)! Two keys to living free from the bondage of sin are knowing the truth (vv. 3-10), and reckoning the truth we know (vv. 11-23). The truth is we died to sin, and therefore shouldn’t practice sin (v. 2b). We were baptized into Christ – into His death and resurrection (vv. 3-10).

I. “RECKONING” THAT TRUTH TO BE TRUE (vv. 11-23).

  1. To reckon (v. 11) means to believe it, trust it (count on it to be true), and act on it – act as if it is so and it will   eventually be so experientially, just as it is presently so positionally – regardless of emotions or circumstances.
    1. Dead indeed to sin – what we don’t do (defense).
    2. Alive to God in Christ – what we do (offense).
  2. When tempted to sin, act like a dead person!

II. THE RESULTS OF KNOWING & RECKONING (vv. 12-15).

  1. You don’t let sin reign in you – your responsibility (v. 12)!
  2. You yield yourself to do God’s stuff (vv. 13-15).

III. WHOSE SERVANT ARE YOU (vv. 16-23)?

  1. We were created to serve someone or something – there’s no such thing as human autonomy.
    1. We’re either serving God or sin.
  2. The bottom line is we are slaves to whom we obey, not to whom we say (vv. 16-18).
  3. You know how to yield, just change to whom (vv. 19-23).

IV. FREEDOM FROM THE BONDAGE OF THE LAW (Rom. 7).

  1. Died with Christ, released from the law which produced death, & married to Christ which produced life (vv. 1-6).
  2. The futility of life under the law (vv. 7-25).
    1. The law exposed (didn’t create) dormant sin, resulting in death (vv. 7-12).
    2. Under the law/works, you do what you don’t want to do and can’t do what you want to do (vv. 13-25).
  3. Jesus delivers us from this futility (vv. 24-25a; Rom. 8)!
