[Part III: IT’S ALL ABOUT THE HEART] TEXT: Haggai 2:10-19 NLT
REVIEW/INTRO: How do you respond when you feel like you’re trying to do what God asked you to do, but things just don’t seem to be going all that well?
I. THE PROBLEM OF CONDITIONAL OBEDIENCE &
A. Conditional obedience – obeying God as long as He does what we think He should when we think He should do it.
B. Selective listening – hearing only what we want to hear. God doesn’t give us options to consider,
but commands to obey!
II. THE CORRUPTIVE POWER OF SIN (Hag. 2:10-14).
A. Something clean touching something unclean doesn’t make the unclean clean (Hag. 2:10-12).
B. Something unclean touching something clean makes the clean unclean (Hag. 2:13; 1Cor. 15:33).
C. Their problem was impure hearts (Hag. 2:14; Mat. 5:23-24).
III. RIGHT THING + WRONG HEART = HYPOCRISY (Mat. 7:6).
A. Conditional obedience flows from a wrong heart.
B. Obey because of love not blessing (Jn. 14:15, 23-24).
C. Obey because He’s God (Mk. 12:30).
D. It’s all about turning our heart back to God (Hag. 2:15-17).
IV. DON’T DESPISE THE LORD’S CHASTENING (Heb. 12:5-11).
A. God disciplines His children out of love (vv. 5-6).
B. God’s purpose – to produce pure hearts (vv. 10-11).
C. God is more interested in changing our heart than our circumstances!
V. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE HEART (Ps. 37:4; Jer. 17:9; 29:13).
A. God was after their hearts more than a temple.
B. God got their hearts, then blessed them (Hag. 2:18-19)!
CONCLUSION: It’s all about the heart! To what degree does God have your heart? When He’s got your heart, He will bless you (Hag. 2:18-19)! When Jesus touches the unclean, it makes the unclean clean (Matt. 8:2-3)!
