Living 24/6 in a 24/7 World – Part 1

“LIVING 24/6 IN A 24/7 WORLD – Pt. I”

INTRO: Are we really made to live 24/7? Do you ever feel like your life is too busy? like you’re often tired, and seldom truly rested? Does it ever seem like life has gotten more complicated than it should be? Could it be that God wants you to simplify your life in 2018? How about a New Year’s Resolution to do less [have less?] rather than more?

  1. God chose to Sabbath (Gen. 2:1-3).
    1. God rested from all His work on the 7th day.
    2. God blessed and sanctified the 7th day.
      1. “sanctified” – separated from common use for uncommon use; dedicated, consecrated, appointed, prepare, proclaim.
    3. Exercising restraint (resting) is godly and holy!
  2. God gave the Sabbath to man to observe (Ex. 16:23-30).
    1. Sabbath” – to cease [from working] (stop), rest, intermission.
    2. The Sabbath was a test of trust and obedience.
  3. The Sabbath makes the Big 10 (Ex. 20:1-5, 7-17).
  4. God was (is?) serious about the Sabbath (Ex. 31:12-17).
    1. Don’t work yourself to death (Ex. 31:14, 15; 35:2).
    2. No starting fires (Ex. 35:3) or shopping (Neh. 10:31).
    3. Jerusalem gates closed on Sabbath (Neh. 13:19).

  1. Jesus’ custom was to observe the Sabbath (Luke 4:16).
  2. The early church observed the Sabbath (Acts 17:1-2; 18:4).
  3. Does the N.T. specifically tell us to “Forget” the Sabbath?
  4. In the N.T., Jesus emphasized observing the spirit of the Sabbath vs. the letter of the Sabbath (Mk. 2:23-28; etc.).
  5. The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath, and Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath (Mark 2:27-28).

CONCLUSION: Is Jesus Lord of the Sabbath in your life? Are you passing the Sabbath test? Are you “Remembering” the Sabbath or have you forgot? Are you willing to sincerely ask Him how He wants you to observe the Sabbath?
