The Truth About Sin – Part 2

“THE TRUTH ABOUT SIN – Part II”

REVIEW/INTRO: Let’s avoid the two extremes of Legalism and Liberalism. Let’s pursue the truth even if it contradicts what we believe, how we live or our culture. Ultimately the truth about sin can only be found in the Bible (Jn. 17:17; 8:31-32; 2Tim. 3:16-17). If not the Bible, what will we use as our moral compass? Sin is missing the mark or standard for how God wants us to live.

I. 9 BIBLICAL DESCRIPTIONS [characteristics] OF SIN:

  1. Sin is violating God’s law (1Jn. 3:4).
  2. Sin is unrighteousness (1Jn. 5:17).
  3. Sin is not doing the good you know you should (Ja. 4:7).
  4. Sin is acting out of unbelief (Rom. 14:23).
  5. Sin is violating God’s law in your imagination/attitudes (Matt. 5:27-28).
  6. There are sins of presumption (Psalm 19:13).
  7. There are sins of ignorance (Heb. 9:7).

  2. All others have sinned (Rom. 1:19-20; 3:9-12, 23; 1Jn. 1:10).

III. WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF SIN?

  1. Unconfessed sin will eventually be exposed (Num. 32:23).
  2. Problems in your life (Prov. 28:13; Jer. 5:25; John 5:14).
  3. Sin leads to corruption (Gal. 6:7-8).

  1. Take personal responsibility for your sin (Matt. 7:3, 5).
  2. Don’t try to conceal your sins (Prov. 28:13; Num. 32:23). Don’t deny, minimize, excuse, divert or blame (Gen. 3:7-13).
  3. Confess your sin to God (Prov. 28:13; 1Jn. 1:9).
  4. Forsake your sins (Prov. 28:13; Matt. 3:8; 5:29-30; Heb. 12:1; 2Cor. 7:1).
