“For you have not come to the mountain that may be touched …” (Hebrews 12:18)
The author of Hebrews told his audience that they hadn’t come to the mountain that may be touched. Which mountain was he referring to? He was referring to Mount Sinai where Moses received the law in Exodus 19. At that mountain the people didn’t want to hear directly from God but wanted Moses to hear from God for them.
”But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, …” (Hebrews 12:22) Mount Zion is the heavenly Jerusalem (Rev. 21). Mount Sinai represents trying to know and serve God through the law (rules and legalism), which does not work. Mount Zion represents knowing and serving God through faith in Jesus Christ (see Heb. 12:24; 4:16; Gal. 4:24-26).
To which mountain have you come – Sina or Zion?
