“For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame.” (Hebrews 6:4-6)
People often look to Scripture to affirm their theology rather than allowing Scripture to form their theology. People often interpret Scripture based on what they were taught, rather than what the Scriptures teach. Notice in Hebrews 6:4-6 it clearly tells us that is possible for people to fall away from their faith. If that wasn’t possible, this passage would make no sense. This falling away clearly can occur with people who had a clear conversion. The falling away being referred to here is not one who continues to trust Christ for their salvation but struggles with sin, but rather a person who no longer trusts Christ for their salvation. Only the person who ceases to believe in Christ cannot be renewed again to repentance because faith in Christ is the only source of true faith and repentance.
We are eternally secure as long we continue to truly trust Christ for our salvation, a trust that is evidenced by obeying Christ!
