“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2:4) “And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 13:52) If they were all (all 120, not just some!) filled with the Holy Spirit in Acts 2:4, why were many of the same people filled again with the Holy Spirit in Acts 15:32? Because being filled with the Holy Spirit is not a onetime occurrence, but an ongoing dynamic. Why? Because life tends to cause us to leak!
Ephesians 5:18 says, “And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit.” The Greek tense could be accurately translated, “Be being filled with the Spirit!” In other words, being filled with the Spirit is an ongoing process!
When a person is drunk with alcohol, that alcohol is affecting their behavior in obvious ways. When the early church was filled with the Holy Spirit, it affected their behavior – they were actually accused of being drunk (Acts 2:13)! Is your ongoing filling of the Holy Spirit manifesting in your life in godly, righteous, empowered ways? Be being filled with the Holy Spirit!
