A spirit of lawlessness is currently raging in America, especially in some of our largest cities. What is the cause of this lawlessness? Paul answered that question for us in Romans 1:18-28. The root cause of lawlessness is suppressing the truth (v. 18).
Suppressing truth and not giving God His rightful place in one’s life results in taking on a spirit of stupid (vv. 21-22). Paul said such people become futile in their thoughts, their foolish hearts are darkened, and they become fools. At this point, God removes the conviction and revelation of the Holy Spirit, resulting in mankind being freer to pursue their ungodly lusts, beliefs and behaviors (vv. 24-28).
This is why smart, educated people believe, say and do things that make no logical sense. What is the cure for lawlessness? We’ll begin looking at the answer to that question next week!
